I love the theme of the early settlers arriving in Aotearoa. The courage of the Maori explorers leaving Hawaiki in open man powered wakas' filled with young men and women, with no guarantee of success. The courage of the English settlers in their small sailing ships with large sails, with the decks packed with furniture, including the kitchen sink. No wonder more then 150 ships sunk, fortunately very few settlers lost their lives, but there must have been a lot of furniture washed up on the beaches.

I took this photo of the rocks at Island Bay in Wellington in 1974, and keep coming back to its drama.
