The war canoe (waka) was the most prized possession of the Maori tribe. The figure on the prow of the  waka was inspired by the kotuku bird (white heron). Mt Tasman and Mt Cook (Aorangi) are reflected in  Lake Matheson, next door to the kotukus' only NZ nesting site on the banks of the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, South Westland.
