Pukaki was a famous chief and leader of the Ngati Whakaue people, which is a subtribe of the Te Arawa tribe. It was carved by Te Taupua with his sons in the 1830's.

Paikea was saved by a whale after his half-brother tried to drown him in a power struggle. Paikea on the whale is carved by Pine Taiapa in 1839 for Whitireia meeting house in Whangara.
